RECESSED NICHE PREPARATION

— PREPARATION & SUBSTRATE

Built right before the tile goes on.

Tile is only as good as what's underneath it. Every shower and wet-area project starts with the right framing, backing and waterproofing — in that order.

01

Shower niche framing

The recessed opening is framed between studs to the correct depth and dimensions before any board or waterproofing goes up. Getting this right at the framing stage prevents problems that can't be fixed after the tile is set.

02

Cement board installation

Cement backer board is fastened over the framing with the correct fasteners and spacing. It provides a stable, moisture-resistant surface that tile adhesive bonds to properly — drywall is not a substitute in wet areas.

03

Waterproofing

A suitable waterproofing system is applied to the shower pan, walls and any other wet surfaces before tile is installed. Tile and grout are not the waterproofing layer — the membrane underneath is.

04

Tile installation

With the substrate and waterproofing confirmed, tile is set with the correct adhesive, layout and spacing. Grout, caulk and finished edges complete the installation.

Protect the space.
Prepare the surface.
Then set the tile.

A lasting installation starts with what you don't see.

— WATERPROOFING, INSIDE AND OUT

What's behind the tile matters most.

We assess the surface and wet-area requirements before work begins. The preparation is part of the plan.

1Remove & inspect

We check the exposed surface for water damage, rot, weak spots and uneven areas.

2Prepare & waterproof

The agreed scope covers suitable backing, shower-pan preparation, waterproofing and drainage requirements.

3Tile, grout & finish

Thoughtful layout, aligned tile, finished corners and edges, followed by cleanup.

— QUESTIONS

Before you call

Still unsure? Text Anthony a photo and tell him about your project.

How much does tile installation cost?

The price depends on the size of the space, tile selection, demolition, surface preparation, waterproofing and any repairs. Anthony inspects your project and provides a written estimate with the agreed materials and labor.

How long will my bathroom be out of use?

Timing depends on the scope and the drying and curing requirements of the selected products. We explain the schedule and when you can use the space before work starts.

Do you remove the old tile and address water damage?

Yes. We can include tile removal, substrate inspection and suitable repairs in the written scope. Hidden damage discovered during demolition is discussed and approved before additional work.

Can I buy the tile from you?

Yes. We sell tile and can help with selection, ordering and installation. Ask Anthony about porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, mosaics and outdoor-rated options.

Do you install outdoor tile?

Yes. We install tile on suitable patios, porches, steps and outdoor spaces, with preparation and product selection planned for the location.

What tile work do you do?

Shower floors and walls, tub surrounds, indoor floors, backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, outdoor tile, waterproofing and cement board installation.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Bay Area Custom Floors is licensed and insured. California C-15 flooring contractor license #1005048. Your project is handled by our in-house crew without subcontractors.

How do you help keep a shower from leaking?

We inspect and prepare the supporting surfaces, plan the slope and drainage, and install the waterproofing system required for the project. Tile and grout alone are not the waterproofing system.
